🏝️ Mahé: The Island of Abundance

The largest island in the archipelago, Mahé offers an incredible diversity between dramatic mountains and turquoise lagoons.
With lush granite peaks and more than 60 stunning beaches, it’s far more than just a convenient stopover.

📍 Regions & What Makes Them Special

The North (Lively)

The most touristy area, home to Beau Vallon. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars and water sports here. Perfect if you like a bit of buzz.

The East (Convenient)

Home to Victoria, the airport and the ferry port. This is the economic hub. Further south you’ll find quiet residential areas such as Au Cap.

The West & South (Wild)

Our favorite area. Preserved untouched nature, winding roads and some of the most spectacular beaches (Anse Intendance, Takamaka). The vibe is very peaceful.

🚗 Getting Around Mahé

Renting a car is highly recommended to explore Mahé. The bus network (SPTC) is excellent and very cheap, but it doesn’t reach every wild cove in the south.

⭐ Our Hidden Gems (Tips)

  • La Misère Road: Take this mountain road for an amazing panoramic view over Eden Island.
  • Jardin du Roi: A historic spice plantation inspired by Pierre Poivre (great on-site restaurant).
  • Anse Takamaka: End the day with dinner feet-in-the-sand at “Chez Batista”.
  • Old Prison: Explore Mahé’s abandoned old prison.
  • Port Launay: Visit Port Launay, the church, and ask a fisherman to take you to Thérèse Island.
  • Port Launay: Watch the sunset from Port Launay.
  • Baie Ternay: Watch the sunset from Baie Ternay.

💡 Our Expert Tip

Don’t make the mistake of spending only one night on Mahé when you arrive. The island deserves at least 4 to 5 days to be properly explored. South Mahé can feel almost as peaceful as La Digue, with the added bonus of far more varied landscapes.
