Health tips & prevention

To fully enjoy your stay, here are a few common precautions to take in the tropics.

☀️ Sun protection

The Seychelles sun is extremely strong due to its proximity to the equator, even on cloudy days.

  • Use sunscreen with SPF 50+ (ideally “Reef Safe” for coral).
  • A UV rash guard is your best ally for long snorkeling sessions.
  • Hydrate continuously (2 to 3 liters of water per day).

🦟 Mosquitoes

There is no malaria, but mosquitoes and “sandflies” can be annoying.

  • Apply a tropical-strength repellent in the evening and in forests.
  • Sandflies: On some beaches, use a thick towel or a sun lounger and avoid sitting directly on dry sand.

More information is available on the dedicated page.

💧 Water & food

Food hygiene is excellent in the Seychelles, but stay mindful about water.

  • Tap water: Drinkable on Mahé and Praslin but may taste chlorinated. Bottled water is recommended for sensitive stomachs.
  • Always wash fruit bought from roadside stalls.

👟 Watch out for coral and sea urchins

To avoid cuts or sea urchin stings, wearing water shoes is strongly recommended when swimming on coral beaches (such as Anse Source d'Argent or some areas of Côte d'Or). Shuffle your feet in shallow water to “scan” the bottom.
